Aurora University

Aurora University traces its origins to the 1893 founding of a seminary in the small town of Mendota, Illinois, that trained ministers and lay workers of the Advent Christian Church. Now a four-year private university that offers 40 undergraduate majors, 11 graduate degrees and two doctoral programs, AU continues to draw on those roots to prepare students for lives of leadership, meaning and success.

The university enrolls approximately 4,300 students each year at its locations in Aurora, Illinois; Williams Bay, Wisconsin; and Woodstock, Illinois. Dedicated to the transformative power of learning, AU emphasizes service to others and the greater good as part of an exceptional educational experience. The Wackerlin Center for Faith and Action and Servant Leadership Initiative have recently expanded the number of campus programs that offer students service training and opportunities, continuing a tradition familiar to generations of Advent Christian graduates.

“The denomination has benefited greatly from what Aurora University has invested in the lives of graduates who have left the college and found themselves in places of service,” said Ron Thomas, Executive Director of the Advent Christian General Conference, a 1970 graduate. “We truly sense an indebtedness to what Aurora College, now Aurora University, has offered to us as a place where men and women have been prepared for ministry.”

Aurora University offers several endowed scholarships for Advent Christian students who want to pursue careers in ministry, Christian service or social services.

Berkshire Institute for Christian Studies

The focus of BICS is to assist young adults in the acquisition of wisdom through ordered learning and living. At the heart of the BICS mission are the twin turbines of growth in the Lord—the promises of God and His indwelling Holy Spirit.

We not only teach but train in basic disciplines of wisdom-based living. We invest in a dynamic community experience. We travel together. We have fun together. We pray together. We wrestle through problems. And we are conscious that our efforts, to be effective, must be informed by principled thinking. To that end we try to be vigilant in our submission to the Word of God, written and incarnate, across the spectrum of life together.

While BICS is not a church, it is more than a school. Between those two paradigms the Institute seeks to address the basic needs of teenagers. As they emerge into adult life, BICS points them to the principles of wisdom-based living, to reinforce, not replace, the impulses of the Christian home and the community of faith.

BICS integrates with the life of Hope Church in Lenox, a significant model of worship and service. The Church welcomes our students, offers them venues for ministry involvement and assessment.

With several colleges accepting BICS courses for transfer, education at the Institute makes sense financially. Typically, tuition is less than half that of other schools. Many kids are taking a “gap year” after graduation. For the maturing believer it makes sense to spend two semesters immersed in theological education, developing a biblical worldview--with a 20-day Bible Lands travel seminar as the capstone of learning!
