IF Update - February 18, 2009 |
This week I had the privilege of watching and taking care of my friend’s pets. This is not much of a sacrifice for me since I, too, love animals. My wife and I have four cats, so I already know how pets can become such a big part of one’s life. The more I think about it, taking care of these pets is not a chore, but a real pleasure. The reason is simple: I know these animals and, in a sense, have a relationship with each of them.
True to my nature and habit, I have come up with nicknames for each of the animals in the house, and they seem to react to my friendliness. I come into the house, and they are excited to see me. When I leave the house they begin to whine and act as if they know I am leaving. No wonder, then, that for so many people, pets are their best friend. I find this interesting when I consider what it means to have meaningful relationships with people. For some reason, some people would rather have a pet than a good friend. This is amazing when we realize that it’s for people that Jesus came to live and die.

News From Around Our Churches - February 18, 2009 |
 DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO
I thank each one of you for your prayers about the dreadful conditions in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Conditions include the massacre of civilians and the destruction of homes, offices, hospitals, schools and farms, as well as churches in most areas. Others are dead as the result of epidemic disease and the lack of appropriate care. This chaotic situation was looking hopeless, and yet God has intervened to show his infinite mercy. At the time I am writing down these lines, a general cease fire has been reached between the different armed groups that have been fighting. Some of the militias that have tried to resist the cease fire are being disarmed.

FROM THE ASIA/PACIFIC AREA DIRECTOR
“As the Father Sent Me, I also send you”
This passage from the 20th chapter of John is a haunting one. Jesus says that we are sent, just as the Father sent him. We are sent to be servants to all those we encounter, just as Jesus served us. We are to serve with Christ’s demeanor while sharing his compassion and love with all people.
The Great Commission, as it is given in Matthew, Mark and Acts, must always be linked with the Great Commandment: ”You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.”

 WEST JACKSONVILLE
90TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
We at West Jacksonville Advent Christian Church are approaching a milestone in our ministry. On February 22, 2009, we will be celebrating 90 years of ministry as a body of believers. Our celebration will begin with our worship service at 10 a.m. to be followed by food and fellowship afterwards. All past and present members are invited to come, and we are hoping to feature these folks as part of the service. They will serve as a reminder of our past blessings, and we would also be able to renew friendships. We are praying that many of our former members will be able to be with us for this celebration.
If you are a past or present member, please invite your children/relatives who might have been a part of our fellowship through the years to join us. (Rev. Logan Mullis and Rev. Christopher Hall) |

A Word From the Executive Director - February 18, 2009 |
 Urban Ministries Sunday
When we think of missions and outreach, we usually gravitate to images of ministry to people of different languages and foreign lands — “the utter most parts of the earth.” We need to remember however, that as Jesus defined the Great Commission in Acts 1:7 - 8, he included neighborhoods and population groups that are very close to where we live. Many of our churches are located in or very near some of the largest cities in the United States. Urban Ministries Sunday is designated as a time to remember our churches that are ministering in our cities and to consider how every church can fulfill its part in being witnesses in the nearby urban communities |
