A Word From Our Executive Director - January 13, 2010 |
Do you know what this is a picture of? It’s our 41-year-old oil furnace that died this week, leaving us in the cold. It was “living” on borrowed time. As of June 2008 we were told that it was near extinction. And now it is officially extinct because replacement parts are no longer available. What has made the loss even more significant is that it occurred when a cold front hit Charlotte with temperatures well below normal. It‘s reported that we are experiencing some of the coldest weather seen since January 29, 2000. While we are seeking bids for the replacement of the old furnace, our staff brought space heaters from their homes to take the edge off of the chill within the building. Until we can install the new unit, we will be dependent upon our make-shift efforts and partial heat from our supplemental source that heats our basement level. |

News From Around Our Churches - January 13, 2010 |
 MALAWI / MOZAMBIQUE
Malawi is suffering poor crops again this year due to lack of rain. The AC churches there have been offering feeding programs for the elderly, orphans and widows. Their supplies are now getting quite low. In September 2009, they started a feeding program where all orphans within the community were fed by the church at one center twice a week (pictured), but as of now they are failing to proceed with the program. They have asked us to continue praying with them for God’s intervention. |

World Outreach - January 13, 2010 |
 FROM THE AFRICA/EUROPE AREA DIRECTOR
Russell Carle
Floods, Drought, a Volcano and even War —
In this new year, Advent Christians still face some of the worst challenges imaginable. In Kenya and Eastern Africa the people are struggling with huge regional floods, resulting in the most common problems of loss of property and livestock. In Southern Malawi and Northern Mozambique our family still prays for rains. They missed the planting rains last year and were short of planting rain when we last heard from them in November. On January 2, a volcano erupted in the Goma region of the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to Rev. Bertin Mwanya, Central African Regional Superintendent, we have family in the path of danger there, too. |

IF Update - January 13, 2010 |
Over the past week or so, I have found myself in parts of the country where it has been extremely cold. Just the other day, as I was catching a flight in the Midwest, the temperature was somewhere between 8 ° and 13 ° below zero. Now, that’s cold, especially for a Florida boy! During this time, I have been very conscious of taking care of myself. I had a good, warm coat and gloves. Even with all of my preparations, it was still cold, but not as bad as it would be if I had not taken steps to prepare for the cold.
As I endured the weather, the thought came to me that I should take the same precautions to protect myself against all of the forces that work against me in my life. This might mean discouragement, pressure from others, fatigue, deadlines, conflict, workload, unrealized dreams, and many, many others.
