New Title From Robert J. Mayer “Adventism Confronts Modernity: An Account of the Advent Christian Controversy over the Bible’s Inspiration”
Many restorationist-oriented associations like the Advent Christian Church often embrace two conflicting principles. First, they understand the Bible’s inspiration and authority in a way that minimizes the importance and value of church tradition. Second, they give high value to individual autonomy both in biblical interpretation and in church governance. Adventism Confronts Modernity describes what can happen when these principles conflict and make it difficult to resolve theological conflict.
This work begins by exploring the nineteenth-century historical and theological roots of early Adventism with special attention to William Miller and the theological impact of the Great Disappointment, the failed prediction of the early Adventists that Jesus Christ would return visibly in 1843 or 1844. Subsequent chapters explore the Fundamentalist-Modernist controversies of the early twentieth century and focus on the impact of those events on the two colleges that trained Advent Christian clergy-Aurora College (now Aurora University) and New England School of Theology (later Berkshire Christian College).
After discussing theological reform efforts within the Protestant mainline and fundamentalist coalitions, this book describes the conflicting views regarding the Bible’s inspiration that emerged in the early twentieth century and their impact on the Advent Christian Church during the 1950s and 1960s. It concludes that further reflection is needed on both the doctrine of Holy Scripture and how restorationist movements balance Christian theology with individual and congregational autonomy.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION MINISTER/DIRECTOR NEEDED
The Boone Advent Christian Church in Boone, N.C., is currently seeking candidates for a Christian Education Minister/ Director. The Boone Advent Christian Church is located in the heart of downtown Boone, basically across the street from Appalachian State University. We are the small, gray rock church on highway 421 North toward Tennessee. The church was built in 1926 and has a membership of approximately 110 active members. Our church is a Bible-based group of believers and is locally known as a very loving and welcoming congregation. To view the job description, click here.
Our veterans and their families have sacrificed much for their country, and many continue to pay a great price even when they return from deployment. Many veteran families go through a number of difficulties when they return home. It takes a special church and family to minister to these brave warriors and to walk with them as they seek to heal and readjust to life at home.
We have recently become aware of a website that can help address some these needs. This website shows many of the issues that veterans have. This website is for the veterans, but it could be used by pastors to see what veterans are going through. Pastors can learn so much of life within the military through these videos.
It can also be helpful for pastors to steer veterans to such a website because it shows that they are not alone in their struggle. To find more, please visit http://maketheconnection.net/ .
SAVING WHILE SURFING
Back in September of 2007, we introduced GoodSearch.com as a proven search engine that donates half its revenue, about a penny per search, to the charities its users designate. ACGC has benefited from this service with an average of about $25 being generated per month. When using the Goodsearch tool, be sure to log in before searching or ACGC will not earning anything.
We want to encourage more to use this search engine, as the benefits could only increase for our denomination. It costs you nothing and it costs us nothing. But it pays all of us to use this service. You use it just as you would any search engine, and it’s powered by Yahoo!, so you get great results. Just go to www.goodsearch.com and be sure to enter Advent Christian General Conference as the charity you want to support; then login. You can add GoodSearch.com as a toolbar on your computer or you can attach it as a foot note on your e-mails. Please help us share with others the benefits of this resource.
ACGC MAILING ADDRESS
Please note the mailing address for ACGC is: PO Box 690848, Charlotte, NC 28227. We are still receiving mail at the old PO Box and zip code. At some point the Postal Service will stop passing on mail to us without the correct address. Thank you.
KARMON NORRIS PRAYER CHAIN
If anyone receiving the Karmon Norris prayer requests by email has changed his email address in the last few months, please notify Nancy Brooks at firstname.lastname@example.org with your new address. Thank you.
