A Great Visit at Alton Bay

This past weekend (August 2-4) I was privileged to be at the Alton Bay Christian Conference and Retreat Center in Alton Bay, NH. It was a wonderful time to visit old friends like Coach and Sandy Peters, John and Cindy Harper and Dave Norck. It was also great to meet some new friends.

An associate member, Alton Bay played a significant role in our denomination from the time of its first meeting on September 7, 1863. The announcement that appeared in the August 4, 1863 “World’s Crisis” stated the purpose of the meeting was “to feed to the flock of Jesus Christ and save souls from the second death.” And that is what the ministry of Alton Bay has sought to do for more than 160 years. Nestled in the southern tip of Lake Winnipesaukee, the summer camp meetings saw campers arrive by horse and by train. By 1900, more than 10,000 campers would visit “The Bay” during the summer to hear the good news of the gospel and of the blessed hope of the soon return of Christ. Eventually, the leased land was purchased from the railroad and permanent cottages were constructed along with other structures like the grand C.O. Farnham Memorial Tabernacle.

The current campground has been reshaped over the years by expansions, renovations and regrettably some catastrophic fires. Yet, the focus of the ministry has not changed. Alton Bay’s vision is “To be a place where Jesus is Lord, God speaks, and lives are changed.” The great staff, led by executive director Brad Smith, fulfills this mission through seasonal ministry to the tenants and members of the association as well as a thriving retreat ministry.

Because Alton Bay is an associate member of ACGC, the executive director of ACGC is an ex-officio member of the board. I was able to participate in their annual meeting on Saturday where new board members were elected and affirmed. The meeting was followed by a fruitful question and answer session with the membership. Newly elected to the board were Kristie Phipps and Donn Fisher. Appointees to the board were Sarah Rice, Kim Hasty, Jen Rosario and Courtney Pedersen.

On Sunday, I was privileged to preach from Isaiah 35 at the morning worship service in the Tabernacle. I am very grateful to Rev. Larry Taylor, Ernie Anderson, Gary Nickerson and others who helped make me feel so welcome and helped make my time there such a great experience.

We can praise the Lord that Alton Bay continues its legacy of faithful gospel-centered ministry to New England. If you’re in the area, you should stop by and check it out, or perhaps “The Bay” would be a great location for your church’s or organization’s next retreat. It’s a special place. I’m thankful for my time there this weekend and look forward to visiting again. To learn more, visit altonbay.org.
