New Release from Dr. David A. Dean

“Echoes of the Midnight Cry” is Dr. David A. Dean’s thesis in which he surveys the influence of William Miller’s apologetics on a hundred years of Advent Christian history (1860-1960). In the writings of William Miller, Dr. Dean examines how two conflicting principles appear. These principles he called “Biblical” and “Rationalistic.” After surveying Miller and the Millerite movement of the 1830s and 1840s, Dr. Dean surveys how six of the leading Advent Christian theologians demonstrate the application of these two principles. He outlines the theology, apologetics and influence of Horace L. Hastings, Miles Grant, George L. Young, Orrin Roe Jenks, Clarence H. Hewitt and James A. Nichols, Jr. All of these theologian’s utilized both principles in their defense of both Christianity in general and Advent Christian distinctives in particular. David Dean demonstrates how Grant, Jenks and Hewitt emphasized the Rationalistic Principle while Hastings, Young and Nichols favored the Biblical Principle. This is the authoritative treatment of William Miller’s apologetics and the development of Advent Christian apologetics from 1860 to 1960.
