New Release from Dr. G. Michael Saunders

Dr. G. Michael Saunders has released a new book: “Proclaiming the Midnight Cry: A Survey of the Millerite Adventist Awakening in the Nineteenth Century.” Michael has a rich Advent Christian heritage. His father and both grandfathers were Advent Christian ministers. One of his grandfathers founded Harbinger Bible Conference Center in New Hampshire. His great-great grandfather, Rev. Joseph Pyram King, helped establish the denomination in the South.

In this book Dr. Saunders presents William Miller and the movement which bears his name. Among most Christians today William Miller is a little-known and much maligned religious leader from the 19th century. The significant movement he founded, the Adventist Awakening, provided what was the last major thrust of the Second Great Awakening. But it was a movement with a near fatal flaw – a specific date for the return of Jesus Christ.

Despite that flaw, the Millerites, spurred to evangelism by their fervent expectation of the soon return of the Savior, brought the salvation message to several hundred thousand people with professed conversion numbering about 50,000. Dr. Saunders presents an overview of the historical context of William Miller, a survey of his life and the movement until the day of great disappointment. He concludes with the fragmentation of the Adventists into multiple denominations and the development of the Advent Christian Church, the only extant evangelical denomination to grow out of the movement.

Why then learn about this obscure movement? Dr. David A. Dean in the article “Rediscovering Millerism: Modern Evangelicalism’s Debe to the Adventist Movement” in Our Destiny We know discusses five aspects of Millerism which mark Evangelicalism today. 1) The elevation of premillennialism to its position of prominence by undermining the influence of post-millennialism. 2) Refocusing the church to a Christocentric presentation of Christ as the only hope for real solutions to environmental, individual, and social problems. 3) Reaffirming a Biblical literalism and challenging the accepted allegorizing and spiritualization of the day. 4) Emphasizing revivalism as a key factor in evangelism and church health. 5) Elevating publications of newspaper, tracts, visual aids, and books as a major tool for evangelism and Christian education. Few Christian movements produced as great a volume of literature as did the Millerites for any comparable period (the height of Millerite publications was 1840-1844). For these reason Christians today benefit from learning about this dynamic movement.

Dr. Saunders presents his information as a survey of the movement, not a comprehensive historical analysis. The pictures he provided enhance the reading experience and help bring the movement and its leaders into perspective. This book is for anyone interested in the Millerite Adventist Awakening and/or the Advent Christian Church.

New Advent Christian Classic reprint released: “Fundamental Christology” by G. L. Young

George Lidley Young (1866 -1944) born in Nova Scotia, Canada, emigrated to the United States as a child and was baptized in the Lynn, MA Advent Christian Church at age 14 by the prominent Advent Christian evangelist, George W. Sederquist. Young functioned as a pastor—scholar. While serving churches in South Hope, ME, Belfast, ME, Putnam, CT, Hartford, CT, Nashua, NH, Pittsfield, MA, and Newburyport, MA.; and despite experiencing extended periods of illness throughout his life, G. L. Young became one of the leading influences in Advent Christian theological development during the last decade of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century.

“Fundamental Christology,” though, holds a unique place in his writings. For decades, the leading theological influence among Advent Christians was Miles Grant, a militant materialist, rationalist, and adamant non-trinitarian. By the turn of the 20th century, Grant’s influence had begun to diminish, and he spent most of his final years on the West Coast. Young’s “Fundamental Christology” proved to be the first salvo of the trinitarian resurgence in the Advent Christian denomination.

The book published in 1906 generated no response from Grant, who lived five years after its publication. Grant, who once held tremendous influence over the Advent Christian Publication Society, no longer retained enough influence to prevent the Society from publishing Young’s book. Perhaps a factor in a lack of rebuttal is the nature of “Fundamental Christology.” G. L. Young presents the doctrine of Christ in a positive exposition of the Biblical evidence. He refrains from directly citing or refuting specific points of Grant’s materialist non-trinitarianism. He allows the exegesis of Scripture to accomplish the refutation. This methodology set the pattern which later Advent Christian Theologians would emulate in expounding their doctrinal positions.

Due the historical significance and theological insight contained in this volume, Himes Publications, is pleased to present “Fundamental Christology” to a new generation of Advent Christians.

Rev. Clinton E. Taber Releases Autobiography

“Overshadowed,” the autobiography of Rev. Clinton E. Taber, Superintendent Emeritus of the Eastern Regional Association is now available in multiple formats on Amazon.

Rev. Taber describes his book:

The journey of life is lived among the shadows often obscuring the rugged terrain before us. We don’t know from one day to the next what that day might bring. What happens is dictated by a set of influences, circumstances, or beliefs, over which we have little control. Why did I do this or that, why did this happen or that, why did I go here or there, what might I have done differently? Life can be a cadre of questions.

  • If you have pondered questions about the shape of your journey, this book may help you find some answers.
  • Not every shadow that crosses your path represents a welcome presence.
  • The Almighty casts a shadow of his presence which sustains, guides and keeps us each step of the journey.

This book is the story of my journey, a story of suspense, intrigue, faltering and triumph under the shadow of the Almighty.

Enjoy. Learn. Explore. Believe!
