Baptisms Against Backdrop of Military Coup

MYANMAR – The military of Myanmar staged a coup on February 1, the day the new heavily democratic parliament was to begin meeting. Dozens of government officials were arrested. Since that day, the military has continued to strengthen its hold on power by disrupting communication platforms and closing the international airport. We have heard from our four leaders in Myanmar that they and their ministries are okay at present. In fact, just last Saturday, they baptized six new believers.

But there is much uncertainty about the future including concern over rising food prices. One leader wrote last week:

“Myanmar future is dark and will face many difficulties because of military control. Most people will fight with non-violence. Today is the beginning. Extreme Buddhist groups and extreme Burmese nationalists will have power under military government.”

Indeed, news sources are reporting this week on the growing protests throughout the country and the military’s strict response. Our Asia Pacific Area Director received a text from Pastor Tim on February 7 that relayed a sense of alarm:

“Today is very danger in the whole Myanmar. Protest military whole Myanmar. Not sure internet coming days.”

There are about 40 AC churches in Myanmar, two active Bible colleges and hundreds of orphans that are under the care of the four pastors there. This upheaval will certainly pose significant challenges to daily life and Christian ministry. Pray for our brothers and sisters in Myanmar.
