Cabrizos Family Separated by COVID-19 Restrictions

PHILIPPINES – When missionary Rowena Cabrizos left Japan to return home to the Philippines in early February, no one knew that the coronavirus would cause such widespread and long-term effects. Rowena and husband Erwin left their son Zoe in Japan in the care of close family members with the expectation of returning the following month. Then COVID-19 hit. Lockdowns were put in place. Travel between the Philippines and Japan was suspended. To make matters worse, the Cabrizoses needed to be back in Japan to renew their visa for ministry in that country. Because of the travel restrictions, their visas expired in May without the opportunity to renew. The Japanese government graciously made provision for such cases by allowing for an application for a Certificate of Eligibility, which would allow for entry into Japan and expediting the visa renewal process when travel is resumed. In May Rowena and Erwin applied for the Certificate of Eligibility.

Now in August, the travel restrictions are still in place. Zoe has been separated from his parents for six months. But he is well cared for by his loving extended family. There are signs of hope on the horizon. This week Rowena and Erwin were granted their Certificates of Eligibility. They are hopeful that travel to Japan will resume in September. Unfortunately, continued outbreaks of COVID-19 in the Philippines capital of Manila and other parts of Asia mean there is still uncertainty. Please pray for a merciful end to COVID-19 and that the Cabrizos family can be reunited soon.
