Edwin Howard Carter, 89, of Vernon is asleep in the Lord as of June 13, 2016. Born to Harvey and Hazel (Carvell) Carter in Mapleton, Maine, on March 4, 1927. He graduated from Mapleton High School in 1945. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and was sent to Italy to assist in the return of prisoners of war to Germany. Upon discharge from the service, he attended Aurora College in Aurora, IL, and New England School of Theology in Boston, MA.
Edwin married his sweetheart, Mary E. Parks of Washburn, ME, on June 28, 1949. His life’s work was service to his Lord as a pastor, being ordained in the Advent Christian denomination. Serving in churches in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Nova Scotia with ministry extending to a children’s camp in Virginia, Camp ACCOVAC, as well as manager of Vernon Hall in Vernon, VT.
He was predeceased by his brother, Gerald Carter.
He is survived by his wife, Mary E. (Parks) Carter of Vernon and their four sons: Paul Carter and his wife, Glennis of Stockholm, ME; William Carter and his wife, Barbara of Duxbury, VT; Philip Carter and his wife, Gloria, of South Portland, ME; and Calvin Carter of Redmond, OR. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many special friends.
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at Vernon Advent Christian Church. Burial will follow at Tyler Cemetery in Vernon. A second celebration will be held at 2:30 p.m. at Vernon Hall. The Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
