Cristo Salva: Changes During Turmoil

By Latin America Area Director John Gilbert

HONDURAS – Cristo Salva has suspended all future mission trips. The COVID situation and extreme violence make it unsafe to travel. Cristo Salva’s U.S. leadership continues to be in touch with Ledy Marco’s family and Enrique (leader in Honduras) to assess the situation in Honduras. Enrique continues to minister in three isolated mountain villages near San Marcos. Pastor Ray Marco also continues to meets with Enrique weekly for online discipleship training.

The schools in Honduras are still closed. Cristo Salva is looking at making some changes once schools reopen. They are considering changing the scholarship program to be school focused (with trusted teachers) to ensure that resources go only to students who are present for class. Verifying that the scholarship recipients are actually attending classes has always been a difficult task. This problem has only worsened with the increased violence and COVID.

Leadership is also considering re-allocating some of the feeding program resources to areas that seem to have a greater need, particularly in the rural areas. Some of the current feeding programs will continue, however, Cristo Salva wants to complete an evaluation of the entire program before changes are made.

The clinic in Macuelizo continues to be used by the Honduran government as the only 24/7 dedicated COVID clinic in all of Honduras. They have also been approached to transition the clinic (post COVID need) to be a regional birthing clinic. No decision will be reached until after the COVID situation is under control.

Pastor Ray continues to suffer from neuropathy from his bout with cancer and is still advised not to travel. He is scheduled for an endoscopy to see if perhaps the medication regimen can be reduced to help with his pain.
