Dylan Forgey: From MTI to the Pulpit

Simple equations have quick answers. In math, two and two equals four and in the world of art, blue and yellow equals green. Answers to more complex equations take time and my leadership journey has been a complex equation. I knew I was called to enroll in the Ministry Training Institute (MTI), but I also didn’t know what I was doing. How could those two facts equal a call to pastoral ministry?

I knew MTI was for me when I audited one of their classes. I liked the teaching style, the peer feedback and the consistent student mentorship. I was all in. I craved studying the Scriptures, participating in my community and deepening my relationship with God.

Once enrolled, the program’s material led me to explore my faith in Jesus by studying the Scriptures. I found my time with the Spirit in prayer to be flourishing and I began to view veterans of the faith with respect and dignity. I found myself thinking more about my leadership calling.

For years I’ve desired to see people become disciples of Jesus, but I lacked direction and I knew I needed to grow in discernment. It became clear through my MTI studies that I could already preach what I knew to be true, and I could care for people’s souls out of love as they followed Christ. This program has given me a behind-the-scenes look at preaching to and teaching real people. Unlike other scholastic opportunities where people may wait years before uttering one word from the pulpit to assess a gift, MTI has provided a gracious platform.

My family and I have appreciated the flexibility of the MTI schedule which allows me to be a stay-at-home dad for my infant son. My coursework even led to a job as assistant pastor at my church where I preach monthly, work on a team with our lead pastor and assist in adult Sunday school.

MTI provided a big part of the answer to my complex equation and I’m really thankful for it. It’s hard to put a price on all I’ve gained through the process. The benefits from this leadership development model are becoming more evident and I look forward to seeing others take a step in their leadership development journey!
