Mrs. Hannah Catherine MacLeod Melvin, 91, of Charlotte, N.C., left her earthly home and went on to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, August 9, 2014. Hannah was born May 18, 1923 in Providence, R.I., to the late George and Lillie MacLeod. Following her public schooling in Warwick, she continued her education at Barrington College. Hannah was married July 25, 1942, to Dr. Nelson B. Melvin in Providence and served with him as home missionaries in Iowa, and with him in pastorates in Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois and Florida. She was his secretary when he was manager of Advent Christian Publications, Inc., and served as a proof reader for the publications he edited. Hannah helped organize the Pink Ladies at Suwannee Hospital in Live Oak, Fla., she served on the central board of the Woman’s Home and Foreign Mission Society as treasurer, and was a member of the Altar Guild at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California.
Hannah excelled in the culinary arts and frequently blessed neighbors and friends with baked goods. She was a gifted soloist and sang in several choirs, including the Christianaires, the senior adult choir at Hickory Grove Baptist Church, and in her later years became a member of Blair Road United Methodist Church.
Hannah was preceded in death by her loving husband of 71 years, Nelson, who passed away in October of 2013, and her son Paul Melvin who passed away in November of 1963. Mrs. Melvin is survived by her sons David Melvin and his wife Pamela of Aurora, Ill., and Daniel Melvin and his wife D’Anne of Pineville, N.C. She is also survived by her grandchildren Brenna Melvin Brown and her husband Kevin, of Chicago, Ill., Courtney Melvin of Brooklyn, N.Y., Tyler Melvin of Raleigh, N.C., and Sarah Melvin of Pineville, N.C., and one great granddaughter, Gemma Brown, of Chicago, Ill.
A service to celebrate Hannah’s life was held at the Blair Road United Methodist Church on Friday, August 15, 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation at jdrf.org or to Blair Road United Methodist Church.
