Missionary Martha Wright Dies at Age 79

Martha Louise Wright of Thomaston, Georgia died on August 9, 2020. Martha Wright, along with her husband Earl Wright, served as ACGC missionaries to India from 1998 to 2008.

Martha wanted to be a missionary nurse early in her Christian walk. Convinced by her pastor to attend Bible college before nursing school, she left New Hampshire for Berkshire Christian College in Lenox, Massachusetts. There, she met and married Earl. A Californian, he had sensed the Lord leading him into full-time Christian service during a Christian camp meeting. They married and began their ministry after Earl’s graduation in 1962. Years later, Martha became a nurse, waiting until the youngest of their three children was in school.

Earl and Martha ministered in churches in Florida, California, Washington, Georgia and Alabama. It was during their last pastorate, in Panama City, Florida, that Martha felt a renewed call to missions. While praying with the church for Advent Christian missions, Martha felt a special burden for India. She suggested to Earl that they may be the “prayed for” missionaries. Several months later they approached Rev. Harold Patterson, who at the time was World Mission Director for the Advent Christian General Conference, and were approved for service within the year.

Throughout their time of preparation for India, the Lord graciously provided many signs of confirmation. Health issues were miraculously resolved. Visas were issued in extraordinary time, with much longer time allowances than is usual. Insurance policies that usually require months to process were issued in hours. Earl and Martha were skeptical that the mission board would consider people their age. By the board’s confirmation and these accompanying signs, the Lord seemed to be saying to the Wrights, “I am not ready for you two to retire. I have many more great works in store for you.”

Earl and Martha worked as administrators in the Guindy compound in India for nearly 10 years. This work was vital as much-needed resources were collected and distributed from this site. Their work included field supervision, encouragement of pastors, meeting government regulations and oversight of the mission in India.

Visitation will be held on Friday, August 14th 2020 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Coggins Funeral Home (321 Hannahs Mill Rd, Thomaston, GA 30286). A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 15th 2020 at 11:00 AM at the Fellowship Baptist Church (3133 Crest Hwy, Thomaston, GA 30286).
