MTI Intro Series: How Does MTI Work?

Blog post by Matt Larkin, MTI Program Coordinator

Like many theological education endeavors, MTI begins with curiosity. Perhaps you’ve been involved with your local church for a while and wonder if there are ways to continue to be equipped in ministry? As a parent or spouse, you might desire to continue in your discipleship in care for your family. Maybe you’ve sensed an invitation from God, affirmed by others, to explore vocational ministry? Whatever it may be, your MTI journey starts with reaching out. Contact program director, Matt Larkin, or your nearest Field Director to schedule an information call where they could answer any questions you might have about the program.

As you prayerfully discern your participation in the Ministry Training Institute and determine to proceed; complete and submit an application. This application includes information about you and your desire to pursue theological formation. Along with sharing your story, you’ll also be required to submit two letters of recommendation. One will be a reference from leadership at your church; the other a personal reference. These letters should speak to your character, experience, and gifts. If you are married, one of the recommendations should come from someone who knows you and your spouse well and can speak to your marriage relationship. Couples are encouraged to participate in MTI together (we offer two-for-one tuition.)

Your application will be reviewed; upon acceptance, you’ll be provided with a letter along with your cohort start date. At this time, you’ll also fill out your financial agreement forms and submit your initial deposit. You’ll receive access to your online learning platform once these items are received. A field director will reach out to schedule a brief introduction and orientation.

An important element of this program are your mentor sessions. A mentor is someone you will be meeting with one-on-one to talk through how you are doing and how you are processing the material. This person can be someone you currently know in Christian leadership or a Field Director can help connect you with someone.

Once your course begins, you’ll engage in independent learning as you complete your reading and other assignments. Cohort gatherings provide opportunities to talk through some of what you are learning with fellow learners. Your course facilitator will highlight key takeaways and provide guidance with course requirements.

MTI is designed to be accessible and affordable and fits most schedules. If you ever need help, your course facilitator or field directors are available to assist. For more information, visit mtiprogram.com.
