MTI Intro Series: What is a Mentor?

Blog post by Matt Larkin, MTI Program Coordinator

Mentors are the eyes and ears of the MTI program.

As a competency based program, the Ministry Training Institute desires students to sincerely consider the various topics and concepts they are learning in our courses. Theological education is more than simply head knowledge, it invites learners to think about how our beliefs are applied and expressed in our daily lives. One-on-one conversations are a crucial part of this process, this is where the MTI Mentor fits in.

MTI Mentors are the eyes and ears of the program. Typically connected with the student’s local church, these men and women use their own ministry and life experience to come alongside students as they go through their courses. While discussions happen during the cohort gatherings, mentor sessions are conversations where students can check-in and reflect on their classes. They are able to share where they are at personally as well as gain encouragement and support from their mentor. This is helpful as students begin to articulate and communicate the various concepts they are learning. With their mentor, they can brainstorm about how these ideas can be applied and influence their ministry calling. As part of their coursework, students make summaries of their mentor sessions to keep record of their progress.

While students select their mentors, MTI does require an orientation session before proceeding. It is best for both the student, and the mentor, for participants to be familiar with the approach and objectives of MTI. Field Directors work with mentors, providing them with course updates, upcoming assignments, and potential talking points for mentor sessions. Mentors also have access to course material and are invited to participate in MTI seminars. We are grateful to those who have been willing to participate in this way as MTI Mentors offer significant benefits to our students personally and spiritually.
