MTI Intro Series: What is the MTI Curriculum?

Blog post by Matt Larkin, MTI Program Coordinator

When it comes to training leaders within our churches, what are the key areas important to their theological formation? How does this inform the Ministry Training Institute’s curriculum? Each student who enrolls in the MTI program will go through six core courses designed to establish a strong theological foundation. These courses form the first two years of a student’s experience, building into their final eighteen months of ministry-specific instruction.

The church doesn't have a mission, God's mission has a church

One of the foundational principles of MTI is; the church doesn’t have a mission, God’s mission has a church. Understanding this mission is crucial to our participation as Christ’s body here on earth. As part of this, students will engage in one year of study focusing on scripture and history. Participants will be able to articulate a theological foundation of God’s mission as well as comprehend the significance of God’s people as it relates to the mission expressed in the Old Testament, New Testament, and today. This year closes with attention on the importance of the reliability and authority of Scripture. Students gain knowledge and grow in appreciation for the inspiration and canonization of the Bible.

Systematic and Biblical theology

The remaining core courses turn their attention to theology as students are introduced to systematic and biblical theology. While these areas often seem like “top-shelf” subjects reserved only for theologians, the reality is every believer engages with these approaches each day. These complementary aspects of theological education are important to our students’ growth while they wrestle with the various concepts presented in these classes. This culminates in a study of John’s gospel where students apply the various principles and frameworks they’ve learned. This course explores the major theological themes and topics of this unique gospel.

More than just theology

While these areas are important to the discipleship of leaders, MTI also focuses on character development. As part of the curriculum, students engage in a variety of assessments along with intentional time with a mentor. These tools are part of learning how God has designed each one of us to partner with Him and others. Practical seminars are also provided to support our students’ continued growth in all aspects of life and ministry.
