Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)

Bertin Mwanya

Conference President Bertin Mwanya shares about the coronavirus.

“As far as the DRC, the population in Lubumbashi has been confined to stay home to avoid the spread of the virus. Churches, restaurants, stadiums and video halls have been closed for a tentative period of one month, possibly up to the end of April. Public transportation through buses and taxis has been reduced. The number of the passengers cannot exceed 10 people on a bus and three people in the taxi. Public gatherings with large numbers of people are being prohibited. Additionally, we’ve been asked to avoid traveling long distances, including visiting places outside the city as well as working in offices. Funeral processions have been limited to a handful of people for the burial, as overnight vigils are canceled in case of mourning the dead.

“From recent information, 58 people have been tested positive with COVID-19 in the DRC – eight are reported dead and two recovered from it. The pandemic is reported to be spreading over most of the areas in the country. The worst effect is that the prices have escalated drastically, as the borders have been closed to the international traffic and the basic commodities and foodstuff have more than doubled the price.”
