Prayer and Fasting (1976-24)

Whereas, God has declared in 2 Chronicles 7:141, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and will turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins, and will heal their land,”

Whereas the blessings of God are released through the power of the name of Jesus Christ to the members of Christ’s body and for the land in which they dwell; and

Whereas Scripture records that prayer and fasting have often been means of appropriating this power; and

Whereas  the Scripture in 1 Timothy, chapter two, clearly calls the members of Christ’s body to pray for those in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, godly and respected in every way, that the gospel may be preached and that all men might be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth; and

Whereas we are living in times of unprecedented moral and social illness in our nation and in time of unusual attack from the forces of evil; and

Whereas we are living in times of increasing apathy both as to God’s wisdom and knowledge and the benefits of obedience thereof;

Be it Therefore Resolved that the members of the Advent Christian denomination be called to prayer and fasting for our nations, states, and cities; for the 1977-78 biennium that Advent Christians be encouraged to observe the first Friday of each month as a day of prayer, fasting and humiliation; that we claim the power of prayer for interceding of God on behalf of the leaders of our government and the problems that confront this nation; that we encourage the Christian community to become knowledgeable of the men running for offices of leadership and authority and to especially know where they stand on the important moral and spiritual issues of our times.
