Rev. Eunice Greene, 92, died on Wednesday, June 2, 2016. She was born to Fred and Elizabeth Brown Greene on November 8, 1923 in Wolcott, Vt. She was the youngest of five siblings, all of whom predeceased her.
Eunice was educated in public school in Newport Vt., through high school. She trained one year with the Salvation Army and made many friends there. Her mother’s illness warranted her return home to be with her. Later, when her mother had improved, Eunice enrolled in Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary. She graduated with a BA in Theology. She received ordination by the Advent Christian Conference of Vermont.
Rev. Greene was pastor of a number of churches throughout her career. Her principle employment, however, was as a public school teacher at Elmore School grades 1 – 6 in Elmore, Vt. She earned awards and accolades for her teaching ability. She was a well-loved teacher in a one-room schoolhouse for 30 years. She had students in three generations from the same family. Eunice maintained contact with some of them throughout her life.
She loved attending conferences and camp meetings throughout New England and at Beebe Camp Meeting in Beebe, Quebec, Canada, and was well known in that venue.
Eunice remained single, but loved her nieces and nephews very much. Although she never married, she raised Marleen, the daughter of a close friend. She was always included among Eunice’s nieces and nephews. They loved going to York Beach, Maine, eating salt water taffy and enjoying Nubble Light, (the oft painted lighthouse) from the beach. Eunice did a large oil painting of the lighthouse, herself.
Eunice was also an avid reader all her life. As her eyesight failed in later years she was able to obtain Books on Tape frorm the American Association for the Blind. Among those, she had the complete Bible on tape.
In 1988 Eunice retired from 30 years of teaching. She lived in Las Cruces, N.M., for a while before returning to Vermont and then later moving to the Advent Christian Village in Dowling Park, Fla., in 1990. For the next several years she spent summers in Morrisville, Vt., where Marleen had a place reserved for her to use.
In Florida, Eunice was a Sunday school teacher, participated in the closed circuit TV programming, held a Bible study in her home and a morning devotional service at Good Samaritan Center monthly for 20 years.
She is survived by her most immediate nieces, Elizabeth Weaver (Paul), Joyce Chapman, Marleen Smith; grandnephew Ken Chapman (June), grandniece Jean Casey (Allen) and grandnephew D’Arcy Chapman (Robbin); several other grandnieces and nephews and their children, making up a long list of relatives to the 5th generation.
A memorial service will be held at Bixler Memorial Chapel at the Advent Christian Village at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 21, 2016. Burial will be in Newport, Vt., at a later date to be determined.
