The Church of the Highlands in La Grange, Illinois recently spent a Saturday evening volunteering at Feed My Starving Children in Aurora, Illinois. Feed My Starving Children is an international Christian ministry that provides emergency meal kits to those affected by poverty, natural disasters and war. The shipment they worked on will be sent to Ukraine. A total of 85 boxes were packed during their 2-hour shift, which translates to roughly 18,360 meals.
Feed My Starving Children began in Minnesota in 1987, and has expanded to include packing sites in Arizona, Illinois, Minnesota and Texas. The Church of the Highland’s pastor, Dr. Mark Woolfington and his wife Kathy first learned about this organization when their son Joshua was in Cub Scouts. This was the church’s first visit to FMSC, but they plan to return.
Volunteers serve in two-hour shifts and undergo assembly and safety instructions on food handling. This is a great option for churches of any size, because the group can accommodate single volunteers, up to a group as large as 100. Kids as young as 5 can participate, and there are a variety of jobs available during each shift.
FMSC is a practical way for the local church to obey Jesus’ commands to feed the hungry (Matthew 25:35).
“We see examples of human suffering on the news every day, and FMSC is a way for us to do something that will literally save lives. It’s also a great way to bring the church together to do something out of the ordinary. We enjoyed some good fellowship while helping a good cause,” said the Church of the Highland’s pastor, Dr. Mark Woolfington. Mark has also visited Feed My Starving Children with students from nearby Aurora University.
