Incited to Speak

Mike Alix, Leadership Development Director

Much has happened in our nation this past week to discourage Christians. We received chilling video and reports of the cold-blooded murder of Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutsaka. Only a few days later, Charlie Kirk was murdered while speaking to students on the campus of Utah Valley University. These events have sparked a flood of reactions across social media and major news outlets — some honorable and hope-filled, others ugly enough to make one wonder if there is any hope left for our nation, or for humanity itself.

As I wrestle with the state of our world, our nation and even our churches, I experience a host of emotions. It is easy to walk through our neighborhoods and see the evidence of evil, responding with despair or even numbness. Some of us shake our heads and quietly label the culture as “too far gone,” retreating inward and keeping our heads down. As an introvert who can display extroverted moments, I understand that impulse.

Yet I am reminded of Paul in Athens:

“Now while Paul was waiting for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him as he saw that the city was full of idols. So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and the devout persons, and in the marketplace every day with those who happened to be there”
(Acts 17:16–17, ESV)

Paul arrived alone in Athens, surrounded by idolatry. He could have recoiled and waited for his ministry partners. Instead, provoked by what he saw, he engaged the culture. He reasoned first in the synagogue with those open to the God of Israel, and then in the marketplace with the citizens of Athens.

For many of us, that example feels intimidating. We may recoil from confronting our culture. I often struggle to start those conversations, or I hesitate to move from dialogue to sharing Christ. At times I even catch myself thinking someone is too lost, “too woke” or too indoctrinated to hear the gospel.

But that thinking is the problem. It assumes the results depend on me. The truth is that God makes the difference. I am simply the vessel. As Paul wrote, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16). We should certainly grow in theology, apologetics and evangelism — but a lack of expertise is never an excuse for silence.

Just this weekend in Concord, N.C., I was encouraged by a reminder of God’s ongoing work. At a coffee shop I noticed a young man reading an exposition on the Gospel of John and “On the Incarnation” by Athanasius. I approached him assuming he was in seminary preparing to be a pastor. He turned out to be a high school student at a local private school and attended a Wesleyan church in Charlotte. Even though what he had in front of him was required reading for school, I was humbled and encouraged. Even in a culture thick with idolatry, God is still at work.

I generally avoid comparing modern figures to those in Scripture, but Paul’s example brings Charlie Kirk to mind. He was not perfect. He would admit that. But he consistently sought to engage people with the gospel as well as with politics. Instead of being provoked to retreat, he was provoked to reason.

Charlie will be missed. My prayer is that, like Paul in Athens, we too will be stirred by the sin and idolatry around us. Not to withdraw in anger or fear, but to step forward and lovingly reason with a lost world, trusting the gospel’s power to save.

  1. Amen Brother. When I heard the news about Kirk it came as quite a shock to me but I know that God is yet able to bring good out of this and I have begun to notice some interesting changes taking place which we can only pray will lead to true revival which would have been certainly what Charlie would have wanted and what we still need very desperately as a church and a nation in God’s mercy.
Charlie’s willingness to go into all these so called academic institutions ( more properly demonic strongholds) to preach the gospel unabashedly follows much in the manner of Paul at Athens.

  2. Evil tried to silence Charlie Kirk, a Godly man who humbly engaged people in dialogue. Always trying to represent his Savior and the message of the Gospels as befitting a child of God.
He was killed for it. However, as seen again and again in scripture, What Satan means for Evil the Lord uses for good. As I write this , 120,000 requests have asked for a Turning Point USA chapter in their schools. For perspective there were less than 2,100 total TPU chapters 3 weeks ago. These young people are seeking the truth, and it is our Moral Obligation to fearlessly proclaim the ‘Good News” to all. It is our time , as we live for his return.

  3. If one has not done this for fear of embarrassment, possible offense being taken, or just plain not caring enough, it is time to offer the Good News of Jesus and salvation to family members and friends, even strangers. To ask one of these, “Do you know Jesus as your personal Savior,” is the most important questions to show you care. Those who don’t believe will be faced with a choice and may be offended or come to a saving knowledge of Christ. If another is a believer, they will be joyful you cared enough to ask! At least I would hope so! Speak out in love. I have never been slapped or slandered when I have asked others this question. But, followers of Christ will face persecution. Be ready. Keep witnessing.

  4. It’s a marvel how creative principalities are at engendering in us timidity – in we, who are the mouthpiece of God on earth. The Lord’s given us the Holy Spirit but the Spirit can’t speak unless we do.
Throughout the Word we’re repeatedly encouraged to Declare!, Make Known!, Speak the Truth in Love!, Be Not Silent!
Yet, no matter how much we’re in the Word, meetings, and prayer we still hesitate, shrink back, and experience a pervasive aversion to vocalizing our faith.
In child rearing the foundations of character development are established early, by repetition, & in the home.
There’s constant fierce controversy about gender, marriage, family, & home because that’s where the greatest victories are won!
I find there’s a correlation between how much I speak the Word, Sing, Pray Aloud at home & how much I speak outside.
Paul admonished us to Speak the Word!, be instant in season & out of season! because that’s what he did daily!
Let’s Speak, Sing, Pray aloud at home and we’ll be more “instant” in the public square!
