Papa Sees Me

Kristi Libby

Recently, we had the opportunity to travel to La Paz (“The Peace”) in Baja California South, Mexico. While we were there, we were able to visit both of our Mexico Conference churches in La Paz. It was such a great visit on many fronts! The churches are alive and well — small but mighty as they reach beyond themselves to serve others who need to know Jesus.

The church we attended Sunday afternoon, Pastor Juan’s church, was having their children’s service. The whole service — from the call to worship, to leading songs, to taking the offering and the benediction — was led by the children. The pastor’s wife, Eva, who is the Sunday school teacher, shared the message. It was sweet to see family members who don’t normally attend but were there to see the children and got to hear about Jesus.

The girl who led most of the songs was undeniably nervous to stand in front of the group of 30 adults. She was focused and somber as she carefully fulfilled her tasks in leading the congregation in song. As I was watching her, there came a point where she looked up and broke into a sweet, beautiful smile. I turned to see what had melted away her fear and nervousness — what had caused her to relax and smile such a huge smile.

As I turned, it became immediately evident: her dad was standing behind us, and there he was, eyes locked with hers, a huge smile of encouragement and pride on his face. Immediately, my thoughts were turned toward Abba, Father God. How often am I fearful or nervous about things I’m called to do? How often am I focusing on my tasks rather than directing my gaze toward him? If only I kept my eyes on him all the time … fears would melt away, radiance and a smile would be seen by those around me as his light and love shine through me.

Abba, help me keep my eyes on you.
