MALAWI – Ken and Darlene Perkins (Bear River, Nova Scotia AC Church) traveled to Malawi this summer (July 23 – August 11) with one mission: to equip pastors and their wives with biblical teaching.
It was a rewarding time. More than 180 pastors and church leaders gathered for a week of seminars — some traveling from Malawi, others from neighboring Mozambique.
Lost Luggage
With every move of God comes opposition. The first challenge came when their luggage failed to arrive. They were forced to make a return trip to the airport — a grueling three-hour drive one way — losing an entire day. Interestingly, a boy scout troop from England faced the same struggle, making the trip three times before recovering all their luggage.
Fuel Shortage
The Perkins also hoped to visit and encourage churches across the region. But once again, challenges arose — this time in the form of a crippling, country-wide fuel shortage. “Fuel shortage” meant empty gas stations. If a station did receive a shipment, a rush on the pumps would quickly empty the supply.
The choices were stark: wait for another shipment or purchase fuel on the black market — where the price soared to nearly $20 per gallon compared to the official $5. As a result, they were able to reach only five churches. Yet in each one, they found believers eager for encouragement and hungry for God’s Word. They are determined, with God’s help, to find a way to visit many more branches during their next trip.
Power Outage
A third obstacle appeared in the form of an electrical outage. No handout copies could be printed, air conditioning was unavailable and lighting dimmed with the daylight hours.
Despite these setbacks, God was glorified. Attitudes remained joyful and hopeful throughout the conference. The attendees eagerly received teaching on the history of Christianity, matters of church order and structure and instruction on baptism and holy communion.
Looking Ahead
Looking back, Ken reflects: “We pray that God will give us the health, strength and support to continue this work. We are deeply grateful for the prayers and encouragement of those who stood with us.” Their story is a reminder that even in the face of obstacles, God’s work moves forward.
