A group of Aurora University students, along with Dr. Natasha Ritsma and me, spent this year’s spring break serving at Advent Christian Village at Dowling Park, Florida. I first visited the Village years ago as a student at Aurora, so it was good to return.
Twelve students joined the trip and spent the week serving in a variety of ways. They cleaned outdoor areas around Lake Aquila and the Copeland Community Center, cleared hiking trails, helped with interior renovation work in rental homes, organized storage areas and assisted residents at Good Samaritan.
There is a long history behind visits like this. For nearly 30 years, from the mid-1960s through the early 1990s, Aurora students came to the Village each year to serve. It was encouraging to see that connection continue.
One of the highlights of the week was an alumni reception attended by 25 Aurora College alumni who now call Advent Christian Village home. It was a joy to hear their stories and see the lasting ties to both Aurora and the Village.
I’m grateful to Dr. Natasha Ritsma for helping lead the trip and for the students who gave their time and energy to serve so well.
