Theological Survey – Complementarianism and Egalitarianism

This section of the doctrinal survey for Advent Christian pastors examined beliefs regarding the roles of men and women in the home and the church.

The first question — Do you believe that men and women have distinct, complementary roles in the home and the church? — was affirmed by 94 respondents (87.9%). Ten (9.3%) answered no, and three were unsure.

Fifty-two pastors (49.1%) answered no to the question, Do you believe that women should serve as pastors and/or elders in the church? Thirty-eight (35.8%) answered yes, and 16 (15.1%) were unsure.

Regarding the final question — How do you interpret passages like 1 Timothy 2:12 and 1 Corinthians 14:34–35 regarding the role of women in the church? — 34 respondents (32.1%) selected “These passages are culturally specific and do not restrict women today.” Forty-four (41.5%) selected “These passages are timeless and restrict the role of women in certain church leadership positions,” 21 (19.8%) selected “I have another interpretation” and seven (6.6%) were unsure.
