Village leaders’ strong sense of responsibility and reputation can make it difficult to submit to a different god, especially the God of the Bible. Yet God is at work in remarkable ways in Mozambique.
Pastor Samuel Kasakatira of the church in Marka reported that one Sunday in March, a village headman (called a chief) visited the Advent Christian Church to see what had been drawing so much attention and excitement. He had heard the lively singing and stories of changed lives – even of a Muslim family who had found new beginnings and deliverance from alcohol.
Curiosity overcame his skepticism, and he stayed to listen. That day’s message focused on King David, the greatest king in Israel’s history, who surrendered his life to the one true God, the King of Kings. At the end of the service, an invitation was given for anyone who desired to know this life-giving God to come forward for prayer.
Village leader Bonface Magaso came forward, met by Pastor Samuel Kasakatira at the altar, and he surrendered his life to Jesus Christ.
A great and wondrous joy filled his heart as he experienced the forgiveness of his sins. Then he shared a simple prayer request: “Please pray for my wife to join me in this new life.”
The very next Sunday, his wife came to church with him, along with his sister. Once again, the gospel was preached, the Holy Spirit moved and when the invitation was given, Bonface’s wife and sister stepped forward together.
On Monday, March 30, Pastor Kasakatira hosted a luncheon for nine village leaders who have recently become followers of Christ. Some brought their wives. Together, they heard a message, prayed, sang and shared a meal.
When community leaders submit to the God of the universe, the impact reaches far beyond themselves. Pray that God continues to do exciting things in Mozambique.
