Advent Christians are feeling the effects of a pastor shortage. However, it’s not just us — it’s a challenge many denominations are facing. Part of the problem is generational. The baby boomers produced more pastors than any previous or subsequent generation. As this age group retires and passes away, fewer younger pastors are stepping into full-time ministry to take their place.
This situation is compounded by the fact that many prospective pastors lack adequate training, and the financial and logistical challenges of attending college or seminary can be overwhelming — especially for those called to ministry later in life or while working in secular careers. While there is no quick solution to this need, the leadership development department and the Ministry Training Institute (MTI) are committed to addressing it. As Jesus said, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore, pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest” (Matthew 9:37-38).
As we pray for laborers, MTI stands ready to assist churches and pastors in training those called to ministry. MTI seeks to support individuals preparing for church leadership, as well as those currently serving in ministry without formal training. While there are many solid training options available, from accredited colleges and seminaries to free certificate programs, MTI offers unique features that set it apart.
Local Church Integration
MTI places a high value on integration with the local church. Students are expected to actively serve in their local churches, using the gifts God has given them. Many courses include assignments that must be completed within the context of the local church. Additionally, students receive intentional mentoring that addresses their faith, studies and ministry works. This ensures that learning is immediately applicable and relevant to their ministry contexts. Importantly, students do not need to leave their local churches to prepare for ministry.
Online Cohort Learning
MTI groups students into cohorts that take classes together online. These classes involve reading and assignments designed to deepen their understandings of course objectives. Periodically, students meet online with their cohorts and facilitators for symposiums, where they discuss their coursework and assignments. This approach fosters a sense of community and collaboration among students, providing mutual support and accountability. By addressing the potential disconnect of online learning, MTI ensures students remain engaged and connected.
Flexible and Affordable Certificate Programs
MTI offers two certificate programs:
- Ministry Endorsement Certificate: A two-year, 32-credit program providing a strong foundation in biblical leadership.
- Leadership in Ministry Certificate: A three-year, 47-credit program designed for senior leadership roles, such as elders and pastors.
Additionally, MTI offers specialized tracks for pastoral ministry, church planting and missions, which can be added to the third year of the Leadership in Ministry Plus Endorsement Certificate. Each of these tracks add 13 credit hours to the program.
These programs are designed to accommodate the demands of everyday life. They are also highly affordable, costing a fraction of what similar programs typically charge. This affordability is made possible through the generosity of partners and volunteers, as well as scholarships offered by many conferences, regions and institutions.
Denominational Support
MTI is sponsored by the Advent Christian General Conference and benefits from strong denominational support. This connection provides students with opportunities to engage with denominational leaders and churches, helping them grow and pursue ministry opportunities. Due to MTI’s smaller size, students have the chance to build meaningful relationships with others in the denomination, including its leadership.
A Unique Training Ground
MTI’s emphasis on local church integration, online cohort learning, flexible and affordable certificate programs and denominational support make it a distinctive and effective training ground for future church leaders. By equipping individuals for ministry within their local contexts, MTI helps ensure that the church remains strong and well-led for generations to come.
One Response
It’s unfortunate that Berkshire Christian didn’t receive the support required to remain in operation.
