God Answers Prayers for a Broken Curse and a Restored Well

Bryce Whiting, Africa/Europe Area Director

TANZANIA – Johnson and Amos were called by the Datoga to attend to an urgent request for prayer. A past conflict with the Hadzabe had been resolved with peace agreements and ultimately an acknowledgement that they are brothers in the family of God.

Following that conflict, the Datoga brought water from their own well to the Hadzabe church building to assist in finishing the cement floor. They travelled 11 kilometers one-way to the church for five straight days, carrying water with three of their own donkeys. This action of mercy compelled the Hadzabe to confess, “You really are our brothers!”

Unfortunately, unhappy and bitter witchdoctors made no such declaration. They went to the Datoga’s source of water and cursed it, resulting in the water supply’s drying up for months. Johnson and Amos were summoned. One party begged them, “Please find the witchdoctors and ask them to come back and remove the curse so our water will return.” But another party said, “No, you do not need to ask the witchdoctors for anything. Your God is greater than Aseeta. You yourselves can remove the curse and pray for our water to come back.”

On Monday August 25, I called Johnson, reaching him at 10:30 PM (his time) to hear this story. Together we prayed over the phone, renouncing the curse and asking God for water. Johnson’s request was that water would return by the time of his departure from the bush on Thursday. It was then that he would begin his two-day journey home to Mwanza. Imagine our joy when Johnson went to the well on Tuesday and found it filling up with water once again!

Power-encounters such as this bring great glory to the name of the Lord.

Psalm 86:7-8: “In the day of my trouble I call upon you, for you answer me. There is none like you among the gods, O Lord, nor are there any works like yours.”
