BELLINGHAM, Wash. — A memorial service for the Rev. Rick Qualls, who died April 23, 2025, was held Saturday, May 17, at Christ the King Church in Bellingham. More than 300 people gathered to celebrate his life and ministry. (You can read his obituary here.)
Qualls served as a pastor for more than 50 years, most recently at Fountain Community Church in Bellingham. He was also deeply involved in denominational leadership, serving as president of the Western Washington British Columbia Conference (WWBC) for several years. He also served as president of the Western Area Christian Association (WACA), a role that included participation on the Executive Council.
For the past eight years, Qualls served as WACA superintendent, assisting churches and ministering to pastors throughout the region. He was a strong advocate for Advent Christian missions and church planting.
The service began with a time of worship led by a group made up primarily of Qualls’ children and grandchildren. That was followed by reflections from several family members. Friends and fellow ministry colleagues shared stories of how Qualls’ life and leadership influenced them personally and impacted their ministries.

The Rev. Ted Swinburne, a longtime friend and fellow pastor in Bellingham, delivered the message. The Rev. Schad Russell — Qualls’ son-in-law, pastor of the Nooksack Advent Christian Church, and Executive Council member — performed “The Midnight Cry.” The service concluded with remarks from Qualls’ wife, Verna, and a benediction by his oldest son, R.J. A reception followed, offering time for guests to greet the family.
Qualls was a dear friend, a great encourager, a wise mentor to many, and a shining example of Christian leadership. His death leaves a significant void in denominational life. His energy, drive and Christ-centered vision were often the catalyst for forward movement — frequently the voice urging greater faith and deeper commitment. Yet he always led with grace and love, never asking others to take a risk he wasn’t willing to take himself.
He will be greatly missed.
Please keep Verna, the Qualls family, Fountain Community Church, WWBC and WACA in your prayers as they navigate this season of loss and mourning.
