On October 26, the BICS Class of 2027 took a trip to Northfield, Massachusetts — the hometown of Christian evangelist D.L. Moody. To start the day, students explored the area where Moody grew up, preached, established schools for theological education, held summer Bible conferences and is now buried. Afterwards, the class, along with several staff members, gathered in the C.S. Lewis Study Center for a time of singing, discussion and prayer, reflecting on Colossians 3.
While trips like these can be few and far between, we recognize the impact they can have on our students and staff as we take time to dwell on God’s Word. Because our program is largely academic, it can be tempting for students to view Scripture as a textbook and allow studying to become more of a duty than a delight. For this reason, we make personal study and reflection a priority. During our time together, we discussed our identity in Christ and the call to put sin to death, considering what it means to live in light of the new life we have been given in him. It was a valuable opportunity to step away from our normal routines and reflect on who we are in Christ.
In learning about the life of D.L. Moody, we are reminded of his love for Scripture and his passion for evangelism. We can look back and be thankful for the lasting impact of people like him, whose life’s work centered on pointing others to the kingdom of God. This spiritual emphasis trip served as an encouragement that, regardless of how big our platform may be, our mission as believers remains the same: to serve Christ and make him known to the lost and dying world around us.
We are thankful for the faithful witness of D.L. Moody, the opportunity to spend a day together in the Word, prayer and song, and, most importantly, the gospel of Jesus Christ and the hope we have in him.
